Southern Petroleum Laboratories, now known as “SPL,” was founded in 1944 on a simple but powerful idea: that accurate, reliable data is the foundation of every sound operational decision. What began as one entrepreneur with a trailer and a family car has grown into a national network of 30+ locations serving the energy, environmental, and industrial sectors across the United States.
1944
W.A. “Dubb” Frier starts Southern Petroleum Laboratories
A Texas A&M chemical engineering graduate, Dubb identifies an unmet need for commercial natural gas testing as the Texas Railroad Commission begins enforcing new well testing regulations. He builds a trailer, installs a small separator and measurement devices, and tests his first wells. His wife Lillian serves as secretary and office manager from the start.
1945
Incorporated as Southern Petroleum Laboratories, Inc.
Dubb expands quickly, adding Houston lab facilities, key personnel, and a growing client base across the oilfield.
1957
Permanent facilities established in three locations
SPL opens permanent labs in Houston and Carthage, Texas, and Lafayette, Louisiana, anchoring its presence across the Gulf region.
1958
Company formally incorporates
SPL establishes its formal corporate structure as geographic expansion continues through the 1960s alongside growth in the oilfield industry.
1966
First measurement and production allocation project
SPL develops its first measurement and production allocation project for the Sugar Bowl Pipeline Company, building expertise in liquid measurement, meter calibration, allocation, and auditing services — the foundation of today’s Measurement division.
Late 1960’s
Environmental services added
In response to new federal water discharge regulations, SPL expands into environmental testing — establishing what would become a third major division alongside energy labs and measurement.
1970s – 2000s
Decades of steady national expansion
SPL continues opening facilities and expanding capabilities across multiple states, growing to serve oil and gas producers, midstream operators, refiners, pipeline companies, and environmental clients. The same business fundamentals established at founding — technical accuracy, innovative problem-solving, and customer service — guide the company throughout.
2014
Investment partnership accelerates growth
SPL welcomes investment partnership that brings new resources to an already strong foundation. The investment accelerates national expansion, adding locations, capabilities, and service offerings across all three divisions.
