Kinematic Viscosity of Transparent and Opaque Liquids (and Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity)
We perform viscosity testing by ASTM D445 to measure the kinematic viscosity of liquid petroleum products. ASTM D445 determines the viscosity of liquid petroleum products by measuring the time for a liquid to flow under gravity through a viscometer at a closely controlled temperature. The kinematic viscosity is determined by calculation, and requires measuring the product’s viscosity twice.
Many petroleum products are used as lubricants, and many types of equipment depend on using a lubricant with appropriate viscosity. Additionally, knowing a product’s viscosity is important in estimating the optimum storage, handling, and operational conditions of many petroleum fuels. For these reasons, accurately determining viscosity is essential to many product specifications.
We also perform viscosity testing by ASTM D1092, ASTM D2161, ASTM D2270, ASTM D2422, ASTM D2532, ASTM D2983, ASTM D341, IP 226, IP 71, ISO 2909, and ISO 3104. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
