At SPL, we take pride in fostering career growth and helping our employees find the roles where they can make the biggest impact. We recently had the chance to sit down with Josh Sloan, who started as a Liquid Measurement Technician in August 2023 and has now transitioned into a sales role. His journey highlights the power of curiosity, adaptability, and seizing opportunities when they arise.
Starting in Measurement
Like many in the industry, Josh Sloan was drawn to measurement because of the career opportunities he had heard about from friends and colleagues. His first role at SPL involved running a piston prover, a critical tool that ensures our clients’ volumes are being measured accurately.
But as with any new role, there were challenges. Learning the technical jargon and understanding the nuances of different measurement systems took time. “Each system is similar, but even subtle differences require us to adapt to make sure we are working safely & smoothly,” he shared.
Taking the Leap Into Sales
While he was thriving as a technician, Josh had a background in sales and small business development—two areas where he had built a passion for relationship-building and problem-solving. That passion ultimately led him to pursue a transition into sales at SPL.
“My technician role allowed me to understand the ‘why’ of our customer’s service needs. Understanding why they use particular services enables me to cater my conversations to address their real-time issues,” he explained. This technical knowledge has been invaluable as he steps into the sales world.
Fortunately, SPL is an organization that listens. From the start, his leadership team encouraged conversations about his long-term goals. “I felt I could be well utilized in a sales capacity & asked that if a position ever arose, they would keep me in mind. The opportunity presented itself & I am grateful to work for an organization that leans into their employees’ strengths,” he said.
A New Perspective on the Industry
Now a few weeks into his sales role, Josh already sees the industry differently. “I’ve definitely come to the realization that behind our industry are so many hardworking people. What looks like a seamless process is the result of around-the-clock attention to detail by a lot of dedicated Oil & Gas professionals,” he shared. What does he enjoy most? The people. “I’ve already met so many great individuals that I never would have crossed paths with had I not taken the jump into this side of our business!”
Advice for Career Growth
For others looking to advance within SPL, his advice is simple but powerful: speak up. “My biggest piece of advice is to clearly communicate to leadership your ideas & aspirations. My experience has been that those ideas & plans are listened to and taken into serious consideration.”
When asked about the most rewarding part of his journey so far, his answer was immediate: the friendships. “We spend so much time with the people we work with, and when you genuinely work with great people, life is much sweeter.”
While he’s just getting started in this new role, Josh is eager to continue learning from the experienced pros around him and contribute to SPL’s success in the Rockies. His journey is a testament to the fact that when you combine technical expertise with strong relationships and ambition, the possibilities are endless.
