Elastomer Compatibility
We perform testing to measure the compatibility of lubricants with elastomers by soaking an elastomer in a lubricant and then examining it for changes. This test assesses the compatibility of turbine lubricants with elastomers or o-rings. A prepared o-ring is immersed in a sample of turbine lubricant for an extended period of time. After a certain amount of time has elapsed, the o-ring is removed and tested for swelling and brittleness. The o-ring is weighed to 0.0001 g to measure any size change. The o-ring is then twisted into a figure eight shape and is examined for cracks. This test continues for up to 15 days.
We also perform elastomer compatibility testing by FTM 3432, FTM 3433, FTM 3603, FTM 3604, MIL-H-22072 §4.6.9, and SAE ARP6179. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
