We perform quality testing by ASTM D127 to find the melting point of wax and petrolatum (petroleum jelly), which can be an indication of performance. Two chilled thermometers are dipped into the wax or petrolatum sample. The thermometers are then heated slowly until the first drop falls from each thermometer. The average of the temperature at which a drop falls from each thermometer is the drop melting point.
We also perform melting point testing by ASTM D87, ASTM E794, IP 133, and IP 55. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
ASTM D127 corresponds to IP 133.
