ASTM D1319 determines the hydrocarbon types in liquid petroleum products by fluorescent indicator absorption (FIA). Determining the total volume % of saturates, olefins, and aromatics in petroleum products is important as a measure of the quality of fuels, such as specified in Specification ASTM D1655 and ASTM D4814. FIA by ASTM D1319 covers the determination of hydrocarbon types over the concentration ranges from 5 to 99 volume % aromatics, 0.3 to 55 volume % olefins, and 1 to 95 volume % saturates in petroleum fractions that distill below 315°C.
Historically, ASTM D1319 has been the industry-recognized test method for determining the hydrocarbon types in liquid petroleum products. In 2018, it became apparent that the sole source of supply for the fluorescent indicator dyed gel used in ASTM D1319 was no longer available. ASTM International and industry leaders are working to reverse-engineer the dyed gel, but have not yet confirmed interchangeability between different gels.
An alternative test to ASTM D1319 is ASTM D6379. We perform testing by ASTM D6379 to determine the types and concentration of hydrocarbons in jet fuel. ASTM D6379 uses a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system to precisely quantify the concentration of mono-aromatics, di-aromatic, and total aromatics in jet fuel. The two methods are comparable and recommended by ASTM D1655 to report the total aromatic content in aviation turbine fuels.
