We perform testing by ASTM D2500 to find the cloud point, the temperature at which a fuel forms clouds or clusters of hydrocarbon crystals in cold weather. For petroleum products and biodiesel fuels, ‘cloud point’ is the temperature at which the product begins to form clusters of hydrocarbon crystals, or ‘clouds’. This marks the point where the petroleum product begins to gel. This can lead to plugged filters and other engine performance problems in cool weather. This test method only covers transparent petroleum products and biodiesel fuels that have a cloud point below 49°C.
We also perform cloud point testing by ASTM D5771, ASTM D5773, DIN 51597, FTM 202, FTM 203, IP 444, IP 446, ISO 3015, MIL-DTL-17111 §4.5.3.2, and MIL-H-22072 §4.6.7. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
