Fuels & Lubricants Testing Capabilities

ASTM D3242 (Acidity in Aviation Turbine Fuel)

April 5, 2024

We perform testing by ASTM D3242 to find trace amounts of acid in jet fuel, which can impair the fuel’s water separation characteristics and cause corrosion. Some acids can be present in aviation turbine fuels due either to the acid treatment during the refining process or to naturally occurring organic acids. Significant acid contamination is unlikely because of the many check tests made during the refining process. However, trace amounts of acid are undesirable because it can impair the water separation characteristics of the aviation turbine fuel and cause the fuel to corrode metals. Acidity by ASTM D3242 determines the acidity in aviation turbine fuel in the range from 0.000 to 0.100 mg KOH/g.

We also perform acidity and acid number testing by ASTM D1613, ASTM D664, ASTM D7795, ASTM D847, ASTM D974, IP 139, IP 177, IP 354, ISO 6618, ISO 6619, and SAE ARP5088. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.

Sample quantity required: 250 ml

ASTM D3242 corresponds to IP 354.
