Fuels & Lubricants Testing Capabilities

ASTM D4737 (Cetane Index Analysis)

April 10, 2024

We perform diesel testing by ASTM D4737 to estimates the cetane number of diesel (ASTM D613) from density and distillation measurements. Cetane number is a measure of the ignition quality of the fuel and influences combustion roughness. The cetane number requirements depend on engine design, size, nature of speed and load variations, and on starting and atmospheric conditions. Calculating the cetane number by ASTM D4737 requires density (ASTM D4052 – Density & API Gravity or ASTM D1298 – Density (API Gravity)) and distillation (ASTM D86 – Distillation) measurements.

We also perform cetane testing by ASTM D613, ASTM D976, IP 41, and ISO 5165. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.

Sample quantity required: 500 ml
