We perform testing by ASTM D4815 to analyze the levels of oxygenates and ethanol in gasoline for quality control and contamination detection purposes. Using cleaner-burning oxygenated gasoline can reduce carbon monoxide emissions. Extra oxygen enhances fuel combustion and helps to offset fuel-rich operating conditions, particularly during vehicle starting. Ethers, alcohols, and other oxygenates can be added to gasoline to increase octane number and to reduce emissions. However, depending on the oxygenate type, increasing oxygenate content above a certain level also increases the likelihood for vehicle problems. Type and concentration of various oxygenates are specified and regulated to ensure acceptable commercial gasoline quality. This test method is applicable to both quality control in the production of gasoline and for the determination of deliberate or extraneous oxygenate additions or contamination.
Sample quantity required: 50 ml
