Fuels & Lubricants Testing Capabilities

ASTM D7462 (Oxidation Stability of Biodiesel Blends)

April 10, 2024

We perform testing by ASTM D7462 to evaluate the oxidation stability of biodiesel and biodiesel blends by simulating storing the fuel for a year. This test measures the inherent stability of middle distillates (i.e., diesel fuel) blended with biodiesel under oxidation conditions.  Since most diesel fuel sold for on-road and off-road use now contains some quantity of biodiesel, this method is preferred to alternative methods such as ASTM D2274.  The test is performed by placing a measured quantity of fuel in a test tube and bubbling oxygen through the liquid while heating the liquid to 95°C for 16 hours.  Following the exposure, the liquid is filtered and the level of insoluble material is measured.

We also perform oxidation stability testing by ASTM D2112, ASTM D2272, ASTM D2274, ASTM D2440, ASTM D525, ASTM D873, ASTM D942, DIN 51587, EN 15751, IP 142, IP 388, IP 40, ISO 12205, ISO 4623, and ISO 7536. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.

This test simulates storage of diesel fuel for one year.  A result of less than 1.5 mg/100 ml is generally considered acceptable.

Sample quantity required: 1 liter (1000 ml)
