We perform fuel quality testing by ASTM D7687 to measure the microbial growth in fuels, fuel/water mixtures and fuel-associated water. This test specifically measures the cellular adenosine triphosphate (cellular-ATP) content associated with microorganisms found in fuel and fuel/water mixtures. ATP is a constituent of all living cells, including bacteria and fungi; the presence of cellular-ATP is an indicator of total metabolically active microbial contamination in fuels. ATP is not associated with non-biological matter.
