Fuels & Lubricants Testing Capabilities

ASTM E1064 (Water Content – Karl Fischer – Ethanol)

April 24, 2024

We perform testing by ASTM E1064 to determine the water content in ethanol using a Karl Fischer reagent and automated coulometric titration procedure. Blends of denatured fuel ethanol and gasoline or similar hydrocarbons have a limited solvency for water. This solvency will vary depending on ethanol content, product temperature, and the base gasoline’s aromatic content. A fuel blend of ethanol and gasoline contaminated by water will separate into a lower alcohol-rich aqueous phase and an upper hydrocarbon phase. Because normal spark-ignition engines will not run on the aqueous phase material, this separation is likely to cause serious operating problems. The phase separation of gasoline-ethanol blends is directly related to the total water content of the mixture.

Sample quantity required: 5 ml

SPL also performs water content testing by ASTM D95, ASTM D6304, ASTM D1401, ASTM D1744, and ASTM E203. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
