Press Release

SPL Scientists Publish Groundbreaking Research on Natural Gas Hydrate Transportability in Energy & Fuels Journal

June 5, 2025

Katy, TX – [June 5, 2025] – SPL is proud to announce that our scientists Ahmad A. A. Majid, Ph.D., Jonathan J. Wylde, Ph.D., and Colton Asheim have published a significant new article in the peer-reviewed journal Energy & Fuels, published by the American Chemical Society. The article, titled “Natural Gas Hydrate Transportability: Laboratory Testing Methods and Their Translation to a Field Flow Assurance Strategy,” presents an in-depth comparison of laboratory testing techniques to better predict and manage hydrate-related flow assurance risks in the energy industry.

The research evaluates three industry recognized testing methods including rocking cells, autoclave testing, and high pressure rheometry, and examines how each method assesses hydrate transportability, chemical treatment efficacy, and risk of hydrate deposition under various conditions. The findings provide critical insights to improve field strategies for managing hydrates, especially in challenging deepwater environments such as the Gulf of Mexico (also referred to as the “Gulf of America” in certain U.S. federal documents as of 2025).

In addition to the scientific contribution, SPL proudly designed the cover art for this issue of Energy & Fuels, visually representing the complex phenomena of hydrate formation and transport.

Key Highlights of the Publication Include:

  • Various laboratory tests identifying hydrate formation and deposition thresholds at different water cuts.
  • Evaluation of anti-agglomerant (AA) chemical efficacy across test methods.
  • Introduction of a new rheometric testing protocol enabling more insights into lab-to-field correlation.
  • Practical implications for flow assurance strategies in hydrate-prone natural gas production.

“We are excited to share this research that bridges laboratory science and real-world application,” said Ahmad A. A. Majid, lead author and SPL scientist. “Our findings help operators refine hydrate risk management and optimize chemical treatments, ultimately improving safety and efficiency in natural gas production.”
