A comprehensive range of chemical testing services for umbilical qualification.

SPL offers a state-of-the-art facility that provides a comprehensive range of chemical testing services for umbilical qualification. We have the expertise, equipment, and experience to simulate the most realistic conditions and scenarios that your chemical products will face in the field. We can help you verify the chemical and physical properties, functionality, integrity, and durability of your chemical products, as well as identify and mitigate potential issues and risks.  We follow the highest standards of quality, health, safety, and environment.

Key components of the SPL umbilical qualification service offering include:

Chemical Stability Tests to assess the chemical composition, physical appearance, and rheological behavior of the chemical products under different simulated subsea conditions.

Chemical Performance Tests to evaluate the flow characteristics, pressure drop, and heat transfer of the chemical products in the umbilical tubes and hoses.

Particle Size Analysis to determine SAE class rating to determine the level of particulate contamination in the chemical products and ensure they are free of particles that could clog the subsea valves and connectors.

Material Compatibility Testing to include all metals and elastomers that may be used in umbilical injection systems and ensure they are not corroded or degraded by the chemical products.

Chemical Compatibility Tests to measure the chemical resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the umbilical materials in contact with other chemical products.

Physical Property Testing to measure the viscosity, density, and solubility of the chemical products at various temperatures and pressures and ensure they are suitable for umbilical delivery.

Umbilical Qualification Breakdown

Propert/TestPurpose
Cold Centrifuge-Low Temperature exposure in umbilical
– Storage stability
HP Viscosity Curves– Stability under high pressure
– Viscosity over time in low in high temps
– Determine suitable range of psi and temp
Capillary Flow Loop StabilitySimulates dynamic movement of injection system
– Stability maintained through charge pumps, etc
Hydrate Resistance– Test for appropriate hydrate resistance if water is present under subsea conditions
LT/HP Long Term Stability– Stability under high pressure at low temperature
– Viscosity over time
HT/HP Long Term Stability– Stability under high pressure at high temperature
– Viscosity over time
Thermal AgingThe static thermal cycling tests are designed to evaluate formulation stability over time with multiple cycles
-Chemicals are evaluated for formulation stability at a single static temperature hold
Particle Size AnalysisMeasure for cleanliness
SAE Class 8 or lower, Bins B-F
Material Compatibilityweight change, visual inspection, calculated corrosion rate, pitting analysis for metals

– weight change, swelling, shore hardness for elastomers
Chemical CompatibilityDetermine potential chemical compatibility when interacting with other chemicals
